Winton Castle is one of my absolute favourite venues to work. Winton Castle is an exclusive use venue in East Lothian. Not far from Edinburgh city centre it is a beautiful historic castle, surrounded by gardens and a wonderful water feature. On their website it states 'intimacy on a grand scale' which is just a perfect way to describe this incredible place. The origins of the house date from 1480 and in 1745 it was requisitioned by Bonnie Prince Charlie during the Jacobite rising in the same year.
Winton Castle is a historic building set in a large estate between Pencaitland and Tranent in East Lothian, Scotland. The castle is situated off the B6355 road approximately 0.5 miles north of Pencaitland. The castle is still a private residence, and is run as an exclusive-use events venue
Up to 16 people can sleep in Winton's rooms with space for another 34 in 3 luxury cottages. The venue can actually accommodate up to 400 guests in a marquee immediately beside the castle. Or up to 130 in the castle itself.
I'm no videographer but here's a quick look around the castle. This was shot in January so obviously the gardens aren't in bloom. The castle is also having some work done on their incredibly intricate chimneys. See the slideshow below for an idea of how the gardens look in summer.
Let me start by saying I absolutely love Winton Castle. I shot my first wedding there 4 years ago, the wedding of Jenny & Nick (pic below), and I instantly knew this was going to be amazing for photographs!
The interior is just as photogenic as the exterior and that, frankly, is what every couple should be asking themselves when they visit a potential venue. What will it be like if the weather isn't kind? With Winton Castle you have absolutely no concerns here.
Not only are there spaces for your family and friends to mingle, there are also spaces for you to nip away for photographs without having to disturb everyone. The walls are covered in grand oil paintings from the 1700 & 1800's and in some sections the original castle walls can still be seen. Ornate ceilings complete the rooms and it's fair to say you feel a sense of time in the castle.
During the day the sunlight streams through the rear windows so even if there's some rain (as there was here) then it doesn't matter.
Getting married at Winton Castle? Firstly, great choice! You've chosen a beautiful venue and I'm sure you'll have an amazing day. If you have any questions about the venue or would like to get a better idea of how the venue works from a photography point of view, don't hesitate to get in touch.
After the ceremony there are so many options for photographs...
The pond
The other gardens...
And of course the castle itself makes for an incredible backdrop!
